Calendar of Activities - 2011


6th February 2011

The Annual General Meeting of the Grand Priory of the Maltese Islands, the Commandery of Gozo and the Grand Priory's affiliates was held at the Grand Hotel Excelsior at Floriana, Malta. This was followed by lunch at the hotel.

26th February  2011
A talk entitled "Saul of Tarsus - First century visitor to Malta" was delivered by medical historian and author Chev. Prof. C. Savona-Ventura at the Grand Hotel Excelsior as a fund-raising event for the Equal Partners Foundation. The talk was followed by a pasta buffet dinner at the Osborne Hotel in Valletta.

26th March 2011
An Investiture, hosted and organised by the Commandery of Gozo, was held at the Zebbug Parish Church in Gozo.  A number of new admissions were made, while previous members were awarded merit awards and promotions.   Following the Investiture a Gala Dinner was held at the Grand Hotel at Mgarr (Gozo).

13th April 2011
The Grand Prior in augurated the Good Friday Statuary Exhibition depicting Christ’s Passion through the Stages of the Cross set up by Grand Priory member Dr. the Chev. Victor Camilleri. Donations to the amount of Euro620 collected during the exhibition were forwarded to the Order of Charity. This donation, toped up to Euro1000 by the Grand Priory, were presented on the 4th May to plastic hand surgeon Donald Sammut towards the needs of lepers in Nepal where he annually leads a voluntary team of medical specialists.

17th April 2011
The Grand Priory organised a social event where members and friends were shown the correct technique of making traditional figoli by a professional passticieri. The event was held as a fund-raising occasion at the Scouts Headquarters at Dingli.

7th May 2011
The Grand Priory of the Maltese Islands organized a fund-raising Concert and Dinner to commemorate the Grand Prior’s 40 years of faithful service to the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem.

9th June 2011
St. Lazarus Day activity—The Grand Prior led a delegation of members in a visit to the elderly at St. Vincent de Paule Residence. The inmates were further given a small token of the visit.

10th July 2011
A fund-raising barbeque on Comino was organised by the Commandery of Gozo for its members and members of the Grand Priory.

12th July 2011
Attendance by Grand Priory delegation the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at St. Vincent de Paule residence.

23rd July 2011
The Annual Summer Barbeque was organised by the Grand Priory.

20th August 2011
A member of the Commander of Gozo - Confrere Paul Scarrow - participated in the Gozo-Malta Channel sponsored swim in order to raise money fot various charieties including the Step-by-Step Foundation, Inspire, Puttinu Cares, and the Order of Charity.

27th August 2011
The members of the Commandery of Gozo were joined by their confreres from the Grand Priory of the Maltese Islands for an informal dinner at Gozo's Seashells Restaurant in Xlendi Bay.

17th September 2011 A reception was held at Castello Lanzun to introduce the new postulants to the serving members of the Grand priory. The event was also marked by the announcement of the grandmaster's decree No. 52/11 regarding the recognition of the Commandery of Gozo.

1st October 2011

The Malta Council for Culture & the Arts this year asked the Grand Priory of the Maltese Islands to actively participate in this national event held on the 1st October to ensure a night-long programme of activities in the 18th century Church of Our Lady of Pillar which has been made available to the Grand Priory for its activities by Heritage Malta. The Grand Priory enthusiastically took up the offer since the activity would serve to promote the Order and its activities among the general public. The programme organised by the Grand Priory included

[1] A visual exhibition about the history and activities of the Order and the Grand Priory in the form of video presentations and an exhibition;

[2] A concert delivered by the choir Voice Studio led by consoeur Marie Therese Vassallo and accompanied by bagpipe music played by confrere Joseph Abela Medici.

[3] The leper-support subsidiary branch of the Grand Priory—the order of Charity—also had its own exhibit in an effort to collect donations to further its cause.

The efforts of the Grand Priory’s members were well received by the general public who visited this magnificent church and the activities organised in it during that night. Media exposure included dedicated video shots in two of the local news stations. Truly a memorable night for those who attended.

22nd October 2011 An investiture was held n the Church of Our Lady of pillar in Valletta. During this investiture, a total of eight new postulants were admitted to the Grand Priory. The investiture was also attended by vistors representing the Commanderies of Londinium and of John of Gaunt. A Gala Dinner was subsequently held at the raddison Hotel.

6th November 2011 A Memorial Mass was celebrated in respect of the decreased of the members of the Grand Priory in the Russian Chapel at the President's Palace.

7/8th December 2011 A Fundraising Silent Auction Sale of various specimens of Art and Craft items will be held at the historic Wignacourt Museum at Rabat. The proceeds of this fundraising activity are directed for the Community Chest Fund.

17th December 2011 St Lazarus Day: A powerpoint presentation will be delivered by Dr. Donald Sammut regarding his activities among lepers in Nepal. This will be followed by a mass held in the Chapel of Mater Dei Hospital and lunch for the members of the Grand Priory.

26th December 2011 Various members of the Grand Priory will participate in the Marathon TV show “L-Istrina” aimed at collecting funds for the Community Chest Fund of the President of the Republic. A donation will be made to this fund by the Grand Priory.
